SMARANO ORGAN AND CLAVICHORD IMPROVISATION ACADEMY
Venice – Smarano
Tuesday July 29th – Saturday August 9th 2014
“The 18th Century Fantasia and C.P.E. Bach”

Artistic director: Edoardo Maria Bellotti

PROGRAM
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) is one of the most important composer of the 18th Century: his keyboard music, a large collection of pieces for clavichord, harpsichord and organ, represents an important bridge between the late baroque style and the classic era.
In his compositions we recognize J.S. Bach’s heritage, as well as clear references to the North German keyboard style (Buxtehude, Reincken, Lubeck) and to new harmonic and melodic patterns conventionally classified with the term “galant style” or Empfindsamer Stil (literally sensitive style).
But the presence in his music of dramatic elements, such as agitated movements and rhythms and unexpected suspension, makes in some way C.P.E. Bach a precursor of the “Sturm und Drang”.
Moreover his keyboards Free Fantasia and his organ Sonatas offer the opportunity to study the development of these forms through the 18th Century, as well as to follow his suggestions about free improvisation.
The Academy will start in Venice, a beautiful “unique” city which in the 18th century was one of the most important European cultural centre, particularly for music.
